What/who is a safe and smart pilot?
A safe and smart pilot invests in their aviation skills, so they perform at the highest level of proficiency on each and every flight. These pilots go above and beyond the minimum requirements to continue learning and growing as a pilot.
Some characteristics of a safe and smart pilot include:
Flies more than 75 hours each year in the insured aircraft.
Is an active member of the owner and pilot association (OPA) for their make and model.
Annually participates in the OPA safety program earning the highest award for safety.
Commits to learning through additional training, certificates, ratings, endorsements, extra flight reviews and proficiency checks.
Protects their aircraft hangaring at a safe and secure facility.
Maintains their aircraft to FAA and manufacturer requirements at a reputable repair station.
Opts into the 5X5 safety program.
What is the 5X5 safety program?
The 5X5 safety program combines the safe and smart pilot characteristics with additional activities focused on improving safety of flight and stabilizing aviation insurance premiums.
Uploading your flights to a flight data management system (FDM) using the analysis and scoring. This can be an automated or manual process.
Allow sharing of your flight data with 5X5 Aviation Insurance.
Allow use of ADSB data for your aircraft.
How is my flight data used?
The safety and security of our members is of the utmost importance, and 5X5 takes every reasonable effort to ensure your data remains your data. We won’t share your personal information or flight data with anyone.
Your individual flight data will be stored securely; in addition, it will be anonymized and aggregated with other individual pilot’s flight data.
Use of your flight data, Flight Data Management (FDM) analysis, & additional 5X5 algorithms will be used to improve general aviation safety. Some examples of individual and aggregated data use include:
Individual flight data will be used for:
Underwriting of your insurance policy.
Notification of risks to your aircraft or you are identified.
Aggregated and anonymized data will be used to identify flight risks to all pilots and aircraft for training and safety programs.
How does flight data get uploaded?
Most new aircraft come from the factory with technology to upload data automatically.
For other aircraft, some options include:
Manually copying the flights from your avionics SD card to a computer and uploading to an FDM provider.
Use any number of aftermarket hardware manufacturers to store and upload your data securely and automatically after each flight.
5X5 is partnering with vendors to make this as easy as possible.
I want to buy insurance, but I won’t share my flight data
You can still apply for a 5X5 plan, and it will be evaluated by our underwriting staff.
Assuming you meet the characteristics of a safe and smart pilot, you are eligible to acquire a 5X5 insurance policy.
If you don’t meet the characteristics of a safe and smart pilot, you may still be eligible for a 5X5 policy, but the risk-based pricing will be higher.
Why do I care who insures my aircraft?
Large conglomerates are more susceptible to losses outside of general aviation which impact your coverage.
You want to be able to call your underwriter directly to discuss your proposal or policy.
You want to talk to a person who answers your questions directly and transparently.
You want to be rewarded for your safe flying.
You want to be part of a community of like-minded pilots.
How will I apply for insurance?
There are two easy options:
5X5 will have a comprehensive online application you can complete at your leisure. The easy-to-use application walks you step by step to collect required information.
You can always call and speak directly to 5X5 staff - 612.979.9594.
In addition to your application, you will upload your flights to one of several FDM companies and allow sharing of your data and scores with 5X5.
