Veteran Aviation Insurance Executive Doug Tibbs Joins 5X5 Aviation Insurance as Managing Director

Industry leader bringing high-level experience to help build a more transparent, modernized and customer-focused future for general aviation insurance

MINNEAPOLIS – 5X5 Aviation Insurance today announced the appointment of Doug Tibbs as Managing Director, bringing one of the industry's most respected executives to lead the company's next phase of growth and to deliver a meaningful impact to pilots and aircraft owners directly.

Tibbs joins 5X5 after more than two decades in aviation insurance leadership, most recently overseeing one of North America's largest general aviation insurance portfolios, managing $200 million in profit and loss ownership. Throughout his career, he has led underwriting teams, developed innovative safety programs and worked with aircraft owners, operators and aviation businesses across the world. He also brings a unique operational perspective as a former professional pilot with more than 6,000 flight hours in over 45 aircraft types.

His decision to join 5X5 reflects a growing belief that aircraft owners deserve a fundamentally different insurance experience, one built on transparency, technology and broker-free, direct relationships instead of traditional processes that often leave customers waiting for answers.

"For years, aircraft owners and pilots have been asking for the same things: more transparency, real choices, faster decisions and recognition for the time they invest in training and safety," said Tibbs. "I am joining 5X5 because the company was built to answer those requests instead of accepting the status quo. This is an opportunity to build something better for aircraft owners rather than simply maintain an existing model."

Unlike traditional aviation insurance models that rely on multiple layers of communication between customers, brokers and insurers, 5X5 connects aircraft owners directly with the underwriting team. The result is faster decisions, greater transparency and insurance solutions built around each pilot's actual experience, training and risk profile, not broad assumptions and arbitrary cutoffs.

5X5 has been in good company with owners and pilots associations, serving as a partner on behalf of members, who receive benefits and discounts. The company has listened to and acted upon input from OPA pilots, helping solve their frustrations with the older aviation industry paradigm.

"Doug understands the mission of 5X5 and its necessity to the consumer," said Troy Kopischke, 5X5’s Founder & CEO. "He has seen every side of aviation insurance, as an underwriter, broker and pilot—and, perhaps more importantly, he shares our belief that aircraft owners deserve an insurance experience that is simpler, more transparent and centered on them. He will continue to challenge and disrupt conventional thinking in this industry."

Tibbs believes the aviation insurance industry is entering a period of meaningful change as technology, data and direct customer engagement create opportunities to better evaluate risk while improving the customer experience.

"I've seen firsthand where the traditional process creates unnecessary friction," Tibbs said. "Information often passes through multiple hands before reaching the underwriter, which can slow decisions and leave customers without clear explanations. By working directly with aircraft owners, we gain a better understanding of how they fly, train and manage risk. That leads to better conversations, better underwriting and ultimately a better experience."

5X5 continues to expand its direct-to-customer model by combining aviation expertise with modern technology and data-driven underwriting. The company’s approach rewards proficiency, values individual pilot experience and provides customized coverage designed around each customer's unique operation.
